Ten minutes of your time for my thesis?
Dear fanfic authors,

first of all I’m sorry if OT posting isn’t allowed in this community, but there’s no other way for me to do this; just delete this if it isn’t appropriate.

I’m a fanfic reader and occasional fanfic writer myself, so what did I pick for my thesis in communication sciences? Fan Fiction, of course. I designed a survey to find out more about our writing habits and media use; it takes about 10 minutes to complete.

If you could go here and fill it out, I’d be forever grateful. Of course I’ll publish some of the results at my journal in about a month or two, so you’ll know what happened with your answers.
The survey is completely anonymous; I have no way of finding out who gave which answers.

Please, please help a fellow fan out. It’s only ten minutes for you; it’s a very important part of my work for me.

This has been cross-posted like crazy, and I'm sorry for spamming you guys, I'm just a little desperate, too.

An Invitation
Greetings to all Cali-Pirates!

Our illustrious English cohort, viva_gloria, is coming to stay with me for a couple of days at the end of the month, and I'm having a little pirate party/open house on Halloween evening from 6 to 10. Gloria would very much like to meet some of the left coast brethren, and I'd love to welcome any and all of you if you'd like to come. If you know of any other piratical folk I should contact, let me know.

PotC Costuming Community

I hope this is ok to post here, there is a new PotC costuming community starting here on LJ. I've been a part of the group on Yahoo for a little while but prefer this format so much more. potc_costuming

I figure with Halloween about 7 months away I really need to start thinking about a costume, the one I wore last year was cute and all but I want something different this year.

Please feel free to share where you think others might be interested!

We've got an emergency in our midst among tallship community
For those who haven't heard about it, the wood-hulled brigantine the Irving Johnson ran aground Monday morning on an unmarked sandbar just outside of Oxnard, CA. For those unfamiliar with the Irving Johnson, she is one of twin brigantines owned and operated by the Los Angeles Maritime Institute as part of the TopSail sail-training program for inner city at-risk youth. She is also a ship i volunteer crew on as time permits.

Here are some links on the situation, gleaned and consolidated from the discussion going on in obriansnavy.

The Lady Washington's statement on the situation

...and if you have a registration password for the LA Times there's several articles in there you can find by searching on "Irving Johnson".

I'll be x-posting parts of this to tallshipgeeks, but i figured since many of us in this comm are familiar with the LAMI twin brigs and other tallships that make berth in the various CA ports, we might want to talk about, i dunno, maybe some kind of fundraising effort or coordinating a volunteer effort once they do get her off that sandbar if there's extensive maintenance required. Ugh. I just feel so sick and sad.

coffee/brunch before film tomorrow?
Anyone up for brunch or coffee before the film showing tomorrow, maybe around 11am?

We could hit Mel's Diner for, well, pretty traditional diner fare, or the Green Room cafe for tea/coffee/pastries/sammiches?

Barring that, see you at the theatre!

(BTW for them as asked, daft is moving into a new apt tomorrow so i doubt she will be there.)

PotC on the bigscreen in Hollywood
The El Capitan is running PotC through January 30th, with a costume contest at every show. You get a free pin with the skull from the teaser posters if you show up dressed as a pirate, too.

Hello out there!
I just stumbled across this community and figured I'd introduce myself. I'm Nancy and I live in Northern CA. My Pirate 'obsession' started when I saw POTC a year ago. For Halloween DH and I dressed as Pirates (He makes a good Jack Sparrow) and its been on a roll ever since. Lately I've gotten into the realm of fanfiction and fanart and post those regularly to my journal.

I hope everyone is having a good New Year!

LosCon 31?
Was wondering if anyone on here is planning on attending LosCon 31 in a couple weekends?

There's no specifically piratical programming, from what i can tell, but I'm considering going because i'm a big fan of the guest of honor, Tim Powers (author of the brilliant voodoo zombie pirate novel On Stranger Tides). I've seen him speak at a con before and he's a great public speaker, plus, hi, voodoo zombie pirates, and ages before PotC even.

Maybe we could form a costumed pirate contingent...

Sea San Pedro!
Come one! Come all! Saturday and Sunday, Sea San Pedro! Come and visit the Irving and Exy Johnson! The Kaisei and the Spirit of Dana Point (the Pilgy). Sunday the Lynx will be out and about, and the Argus should be doing a sail-by.

Parade of Sail Saturday morning at 10. Come for battle sails Saturday and sunday afternoon (40$ adults, 25$ kidlets, buy tickets the day of for boat of choice) and... cool stuff.

Seriously, if you'd like, come out and volunteer; they need your help! If you'd like just come out. I'll be wandering around all day Saturday, and on the Irving Johnson (probably) for battle sails Saturday, in a large black felt hat with a yellow ostrich feather in it, and Sunday before noon. Come one! Come all! Come ye pirates! :)

Oh, sorry, it's at Ports'o'Call, basically. On Harbor between 5th and 6th is the LA Maritime Institute, which is where half the stuff should be happening. The rest should be strung out along Ports'o'call, in San Pedro! Yay!

More info on the LA Festival of Sail in October
Today i crewed on board the brig Exy Johnson out of the port of San Pedro (big writeup with photos is forthcoming within the hour in my personal journal, for them as cares), which is hosting the Los Angeles Festival of Sail next month, Oct 16-17, and I got the scoop on what ships will be in attendance.

The "host ships" will be the fleet of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, which are as follows:

-Irving Johnson and Exy Johnson, twin 111' wood-hulled brigantines
-Swift of Ipswich, a 70' square topsail wood-hulled schooner
-Bill of Rights, a 136' gaff-rigged topsail wood-hulled schooner (she's for sale, BTW, for $1M, if anyone wins the lottery)

Visiting ships will be:
-Kaisei, formerly of Japan, on her way to her new home of San Fransisco, a 151' metal-hulled brigantine (website is out of date)
-Spirit of Dana Point, 118' schooner from Dana Point, CA
-Tole Mour, 156' square-rigged topsail schooner, 3 masted, of Claremont, CA
-Privateer Lynx, 122' square-topsail schooner of Newport Beach, CA
-Argus, 68' topsail ketch, also of Newport Beach, CA

There *will* be battle sails at this festival (this means cannonfire).

They are also looking for volunteers to help out, and volunteers can sign up to berth on board the ships Saturday night.

There will also be a party for crew/trainees/volunteers on Saturday night, sponsored by the Port of LA.

I will be volunteering during the festival. Anyone interested in volunteering as well? I can post contact info if so. You do not have to be a seasoned sailor to volunteer, either--they are looking for people to help with leading tours through the ships, and on land as well. Or, if folks just want to attend, I'd love to be part of a meet-up.

First Post! Festival of Sail 2004
Hello!

First I'd like to say that I'm really excited about this community. I recognize some of the names on the member list from pirategasm. Some of you may remember me as a briefly-prolific writer of largely Jack-centric fic in the early days of the PotC fandom (all my stuff is archived in my Memories under "fic"), though I sort of fell out of activity when real life got crazy... The abridged version is, quit my job, sold everything I own, and moved to Los Angeles.

One of the many things I'm going to be doing in LA is volunteer crewing at the Los Angeles Maritime Institute on board their twin historic brigantines, the Irving Johnson and the Exy Johnson. (Ship photos and more info in my personal journal, here.) I was at a volunteer orientation today and they mentioned something that i thought might warrant a meetup, perhaps, and that is the LA Festival of Sail, which is being held Oct 15-17. There's going to be a parade of ships (Privateer Lynx is confirmed to attend, but I didn't hear about what others might besides the Irving and the Exy) and opportunities to board them both moored and for daysails. Gossip is that the daysails will be battle sails, with cannons fired.

I'll be there. Who's with me?
